Been fishing from kayak there since 09. Before they pulled the tee down u could really see how rotten the supports were some gone completely. They will probly want to keep yaks away from the work zone so fish around the private pier or the walls.
Sad to say, but piers may one day all be gone, at least the ones that get hit hard by the elements ... bayside piers will be the last ones standing ...
And that's the reason it's still there ... it's in a protected spot, if you consider any coastal salt water protected. The breakwater probably protects it more than being behind the tip of "the point", but a stiff NW wind can whip up some 3ft waves at the pier in pretty short order.
They should have torn it down after hurricane Sandy. Conditions like this don't happen over night. Like Russell said "Last year I was there on a windy day and the whole pier was swaying". Is it any wonder?
That pier was built 60-70 years ago by and for the military they added the tee 30 some years ago and repairs had been done over the years but the PT pilings that were used are the ones you see deteriated to nothing. Every pier is going to move in the wind/waves like Jannetts or Avon in obx u can feel them move just walking on them. They need to build them like they do I Fla. out of concrete pilings and deck.
They made the new OBX pier, Jannettes, out of concrete, to the tune of $25 million.
Will Delaware want to come up with that kind of cash?
NC got sponsorships, and grants to use the pier for research, wind, and wave/tidal energy etc to help offset some of the cost. Still, that is a big nut to pay.
Didn't Henlopen pier burn half way down a few, 10-15 years back?
I hope they do something, it is too good a resource to lose.
Used to tear the Weakies, and Flounder up off that place with a Spec rig at night.
